Green is so White…..Until Pink Cloud!

Over the past few weeks I’ve been brooding over a conversation that I had with one of my sponsors. The topic was about how the green community seems to be entirely ineffective at talking with minorities about environmentalism. Now, I’m half-Korean and half-White, so I understood what she was saying – I always seemed to meet all of the “people of color” when at green events, and consistently noticed how white the “green” community can be. Furthermore, the people who still impress me the most are people like Van Jones and Majora Carter or Japanese car makers and green builders in China — all people of color. With the election of Obama — as there were just as many whites who voted for him as blacks — it makes me think that there is hope to make “green” black, pink, yellow, brown, AND white.

So, in my own small efforts to raise awareness in the African American community to go green, I have agreed to do my first gifting lounge for an awards show, bringing my team together for a special eco-section of the backstage lounge at the 40th NAACP Image Awards. The NAACP is celebrating 100 years, and environmentalists Al Gore and Dr. Wangari Muta Maathai will receive an honorary Chairman’s award. It’s going to be HOT!!! (In a very good way.)
